Deacon VicThe poet William Butler Yeats wrote, “Many times man lives and dies between his two eternities. Out of eternity we have come by our birth, and back to eternity we return by our death. Between the two eternities we live in time.” But why? Well…one way to shed light on this question is to go back to the 13th century. There is a philosophical concept known as haecceity (heck-see-ity). Haecceity is a term coined by Blessed John Duns Scotus, a Franciscan Monk, who lived in the 13th century, to describe the unique identity in each one of us. It is our special gift from God, our true self, the part of us that doesn’t have to pretend we are someone else. It is the part of us that God whispers to when he says, “I made you, and I like the you I’ve made, so just do your best and be yourself, and I’ll be there to help you. I love you more than you will ever know and I want you to share that love with others.” That’s why we live in time! Deacon Vic
